Discovery Girls Magazine & Book Set Review & Giveaway ? Blogging ...

Have you ever been in the grocery checkout lane and picked up a celebrity influenced magazine, then took a quick peek as your waiting in line?? Now, I?m not saying those magazine are bad, good, or anything in between, but you have to admit that ?if? we did purchases one, it would be for fun. But do we want our Tweens reading magazines full of advertisement, reading where to shop, what?s Hot or NOT?

I remember being a tween and it was confusing. You were pulled in different directions. You wanted to be popular, but still and individual. You wanted to make good grades and be smart, but not too smart. Pretty but approachable. Wear the same clothes that others thought were cute, but were out of your price range, and so on. It?s something Tweens still struggle with to this day.

For the most part, my daughter has friends similar to her. They make good grades, are very community service orientated, love to be outside, enjoy crafts, etc. But there will always be that 1 person, someone who wants them to stray away from their path. Makes you feel like your missing out in something, or even makes them feel bad about not having the newest rage in clothes, electronics, or toys.

I recently was offered the opportunity to review Discovery Girls Magazine. Their Goal is to: Create a forum for girls to help each other and to show our readers that whatever they
might be going through, they are not alone. We feel it is important to give girls a voice and the opportunity to express themselves.

?Real? Readers (Girls aged 8-12 yrs old) submit writings on various sections: Embarrassing moments, Great Debate, What Would You Do? And Health & Beauty, as well as provide input on other article ideas we might be working on at that time (For example, they might ask them a question about their experiences with being caught between fighting friends, or what they are most worried about
in school). They are also invited to submit longer articles, especially for our ?Worst Day? series (about a difficult experience from which they?ve grown somehow).

I received the magazine and the first thing that I noticed was how little advertisement there was. I think that is great, especially when your target audience are young girls that can feel influenced to purchases items solely because they saw it in a magazine.

The next thing I noticed, it is NOT Celebrity influenced!! There was one article on a teen celebrity in the whole magazine. It is written for girls BY girls!! Also girls can go to their website www.discoverygirls.com where they have currently over 40,000 registered users. You can enter contest, submit your writings, and read additional info that is not covered in the magazine that month.

Topics I enjoyed in the Magazine:
Are you a Saver or Spender?
Girls spotlighted for their local Community Service work
What are You Reading?
New Craft of the Month

What is Discovery Girls Magazine Mission?
To connect girls to one another during a sometimes difficult time so they know that they are
not alone as well as:
? To encourage you to love all that you are
? To further your independence through a belief in your own abilities
? To guide you through the most difficult of times
? To excite you with choices you never knew you had
? To give you a voice
