PGT: 'I was bit over the top,' Steve Williams says

After letting his remarks after Adam Scott?s win at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational simmer for a few days, Steve Williams realizes he may have gone a little far with what he said to CBS television and reporters in Akron, Ohio.

Speaking with Robert Lusetich of FOXSports.com, Williams acknowledged what everyone knew: his words came from a place of anger and resentment about how he was fired by Tiger Woods and the unceremonious end to what was once a beautiful relationship.

?Looking back on it, I was a bit over the top,? he told FOXSports.com from Atlanta, where he and Scott were preparing for this week?s PGA Championship.

?I had a lot of anger in me about what happened (with Woods) and it all came out.?

When Williams said what he did, we here immediately recognized the Kiwi was talking like a man who has his first crack on TV to say what he really felt after an emotional event. Naturally, Williams was subject to some diarrhea of the mouth ? less crudely, saying too much.

?I had a lot of emotions going on all week. You hear people say, ?How good are you now that you?re not caddying for Tiger,? things like that, and it makes you want to prove yourself.?

Yes, Williams is not hitting the shots, but being a caddie is being a part of the competition. Belittling the role of a caddie, as many voices outside the game have done rather ignorantly in the last few days, puts the wrong spin on this. They forget that Williams stood by Woods through the darkest time in his personal and professional life, saying very few words about the impact Woods? selfish behavior had on his life and lifestyle. He finally got the forum to say what he truly thought in a free and clear way on Sunday, and took advantage.
