CIPO accepts sound trademark applications | Legal Post | Financial ...

On March 28th, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office announced that, effective immediately, it will accept applications for the registration of sound marks.

The accompanying Practice Notice lays out the requirements for such an application.

This development finally puts Canada in line with trade-mark practices in most of the developed world. According to Shane Hardy and Rebecca Hamovitch, writing in?Cassels Brock & Blackwell?s Brand Management Group?s e-LERT, this ?will fundamentally change the way brand holders protect their sound marks in Canada.?
